Gay life and sex has its own language. Getting what you want, or saying no to what you don’t want, is easier if you understand what’s being said. Here’s a simple guide to words you might hear on the gay scene:

anal = anal sex
arse/ass (also butt/bum/batty) = bottom/backside
arsehole/hole = anusB
barebacking (BB) = anal sex without condoms
backroom (also darkroom) = area in a gay club or sauna where sex takes place
balls = testicles
bear = large gay man with body and facial hair
bent/batty man (also fag/faggot) = gay
blow job = oral sex
bottom = man who takes the passive, or receptive, role in anal sex (receives the penis)
bulge (also packet) = penis and testicles
butch = masculine
butt/bum/batty (also arse/ass) = bottom/backsideC
camp = effeminate
chems = party drugs
chemsex = sex on drugs
chicken (also twink) = young gay man
civil partnership = gay marriage
the clap = gonorrhoea
clap clinic = sexual health clinic
in the closet = hiding your sexuality
cock (also dick/knob) = penis
to come = ejaculate semen (see ‘cum’)
come out = not hiding your sexuality
cop off = find a sex partner
cottage = toilet
to cottage/go cottaging = look for sex in toilets
crabs = pubic lice (a sexually transmitted infection)
cruise = look for sex
cruising ground/area = public place, especially parks, where men look for sex
cum = sperm/semen (see ‘to come’ and ‘pre-cum’)
cut/uncut = circumcised/not circumcisedD
